Hair donation to the Little Princess Trust + a "guess the weight" JustGiving fundraiser. Everything below is ready to copy and paste — tap any Copy button.

Step 0 — Do this first

Weigh the hair before it goes in the post

The whole game depends on this, and once the hair is posted it's gone.

  1. Weigh the ponytail on kitchen scales (1g resolution). Pop it in a paper bag and zero the scales with the bag first.
  2. Photograph the reading clearly — that's the proof for the reveal.
  3. Write the weight down, seal it in an envelope, tell no one. One adult holds the secret.
  4. Measure the length too — minimum accepted is 10 inches (25cm), ideally 12"+.
Step 1

Send the hair to the Little Princess Trust

  • Hair must be bone dry, secured in a ponytail or plait with bands (the standard donation cut). Loose unbanded hair can't be used. Any natural colour is fine.
  • Fill in the Hair Donation Form at littleprincesses.org.uk/donate-hair — include an email address and they'll send Nia a thank-you certificate (lovely keepsake, great for the fundraising page).
  • Sealed plastic bag → padded envelope → get it weighed at the Post Office → standard post.

Step 2

Set up the JustGiving page

JustGiving accounts must be 13+, so a parent creates the account and runs the page "on behalf of Nia" — completely standard, donors expect it.

  1. Go to justgiving.com → create an account → Start Fundraising.
  2. Search for Little Princess Trust as the charity (their JustGiving page). Money then goes straight to the charity and Gift Aid is added automatically (+25%, no admin).
  3. Activity type: "Doing your own thing".
  4. Page title: Nia's Big Chop — Guess the Weight!
  5. Photos: before (long hair), after (new bob), and the ponytail on the scales with the screen hidden. Before/after is what makes people donate.
  6. Target: £150 — achievable; frame it against the £700 cost of one wig in the story. Raise it if it flies past.
  7. Paste in the page story (below), publish, copy the link.
Safeguarding: the page is public — first name only, no school name or location details in the story or photos.
Step 3

The guess-the-weight game

Winner gets nothing but kudos — keep it that way. The moment a prize is attached to paid entries it technically becomes a lottery with Gambling Act rules. Prize-free = legally clean.

  • Donate any amount (suggest £2+) and put your guess in grams in the donation message.
  • One guess per donation.
  • Closest wins eternal glory. Tie-break: earliest guess.
  • Run it 2–3 weeks, set a closing date, then reveal with the scales photo as a page update.
  • Keep a running list of guesses as donations come in — JustGiving shows every donation message.

FYI: a long ponytail is typically 50–300g. Don't tell the guessers — it's funnier when guesses range from 5g to 2kg.

Step 4

Spreading the word

  1. Personal WhatsApp messages — highest hit rate by far. Individual messages beat group blasts.
  2. WhatsApp broadcast lists for volume (WhatsApp → Chats → Broadcast Lists → New List, up to 256 people). Recipients only get it if they have your number saved — so each of us sends to our own contacts with our own list.
  3. Email with everyone in BCC for relatives who don't do WhatsApp.
  4. Facebook / Instagram — share the JustGiving link with the before/after photos. School-parent group chats are gold.
  5. Rhythm: launch message → one nudge at halfway ("she's at £80, guesses range from 12g to 1.5kg!") → final-day reminder → reveal + thank-you. Four touches, no more.

Yesterday I said goodbye to my really long hair — it's now shoulder length, and my ponytail is off to the Little Princess Trust, who make real-hair wigs and give them free of charge to children and young people who've lost their hair through cancer treatment and other conditions.

Donating the hair is the easy bit. What most people don't know is that it costs the charity around £700 to make just one wig — so I'm trying to raise money to help turn hair like mine into wigs for children who need them.

And there's a game! My ponytail has been secretly weighed. Donate any amount and put your guess — in grams — in your donation message. The closest guess wins nothing at all except serious bragging rights. If two people guess the same, the earliest guess wins.
